Why JSON for Spreadsheet Data

JSON is the lingua franca of web APIs and JavaScript applications. Converting a sheet directly means front-end developers receive data in the shape their code already expects, eliminating a translation layer and the bugs that hide inside ad hoc parsing scripts written under deadline pressure.

How Rows Map to Objects

The first row defines property names; every following row provides values for those keys. Numeric cells become numbers, text stays text, and dates are normalized to a consistent format. The result is an array of objects ready to render in a table or chart.

Empty cells may appear as null, so code defensively. Add a small validation step that flags rows with missing required fields before the data reaches production, catching spreadsheet gaps while they are still easy to fix at the source. Log each export date beside the dataset version so stale files never masquerade as fresh ones.

Convert locally so customer lists and pricing never touch a server. Keep the spreadsheet as the source of truth for non-technical teammates, regenerate JSON on updates, and version the output alongside your code so reviews capture both data and logic changes. Pair each release with a short changelog entry describing what shifted in the dataset.
